Nuala Fraser is a Boston-based interdisciplinary artist and self-described choreomaniac. Recently, she attained her bachelor’s degree in Contemporary Dance with First-Class Honours from the London Contemporary Dance School. While at university, Nuala worked with choreographers such as Sir Richard Alston CBE, Lea Anderson MBE, Sung im-Her, Jreena Green, Eva Recacha, and Sarah Golding. As a dancer, they are described as musically acute, detail-oriented, and rich with character. These qualities inform her choreography, which looks to explore unconventional, pensive narratives that reinvigorates traditional methodologies with a queer, intersectional approach. Fraser’s recent works were performed in student showcases at The Place and Milton Court Theatre, collaborating alongside composers from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Their dance training began at the Acton School of Ballet which she attended for fourteen years, completing a ballet education with additional study in choreography, modern, and contemporary dance. Nuala created her first choreographic work at ASB, where he worked with peers and performed soloist pieces exploring themes of mental health and relationships. Fraser performed with the Commonwealth Ballet Company for several years in 'The Nutcracker' and beyond. Further, Fraser trained and performed at the summer intensives of Boston Ballet and Burklyn Ballet Theatre, including performing in sold out shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with Burklyn.
For her bachelor’s dissertation, Fraser explored the intrinsic nature and potential of ballet through deconstruction which culminated in the written work, ‘The Queer Art of the Ballet.’ The abstract was published in Dance Arts Journal, alongside a review by Josephine Leask, who described the paper as ‘refreshing’ and ‘contribut[ing] a much-needed queer methodology and feminist intersectional approach.’ Fraser is eager to continue exploring this research through writing and choreography. Additionally, they experiment with writing criticism of film, the arts, and dance.
Drawing is a majorly self-taught hobby of Nuala’s, but she pursued education at Acton Arts, while attending high school, and most recently at University of the Arts London. At the latter, she acquired a certificate for completing a storyboarding short course. Fraser specializes in drawing portraiture and posters with the mediums of graphite and digital drawing. They have worked as a freelance artist for several years; participating in zines, animation projects, and taking on commercial and personal commission work.
